Tips for taking black and white photos

Black and white photography tips

1. Background
You have to make sure your subject is the first thing that catches attention, do not let the background distract the subject. Try removing the subject till you can get rid of undesired elements in your pictures. If moving the subject doesn’t help, try other angles.

2. Light and shadow
Light and shadow are undoubtedly keys to black-and-white photographs so many photographers always concentrate on light and shadow. Creating the mood of the photographers relies on these factors and if you try taking pictures at different time and angles, you will get different moods in your photographs. Play with the tense of the shadow and light and you will know the difference. For instance, a picture of a flower on a sunny day and on a dull day absolutely expresses the different mood.

3. Colours
Some remarkable colours in a colour picture become nothing in a black-and-white photograph as well as a picture with colour combinations. For example, yellow and blue look striking together but in a black-and-white picture, the two colours get washed out. So colour is not a big deal when it comes to a black-and-white photograph, find a subject that looks emotional in black-and-white.

4. Shapes
Thanks to the lack of eye-catching colours, the beauty of a black-and-white photography is completely based on lines and shapes of the subject. Straight lines in black-and-white make the picture look too flat even though the subject itself looks pretty modern. Try a subject with crooked lines, slanting lines or some curves as they can create more interesting perspective to a black-and-white photograph.

5. Textures
Besides shapes and lines, texture is also an important factor. If you are going to take a black-and-white photograph of a girl, dress her in lovely skirt with decorations like ribbons instead of a plain skirt.
